    The conventional standard separation method is the alkaline extraction method using NaOH (sodium hydroxide or caustic soda) or KOH (potassium hydroxide or caustic potash), and the extracts are neutralized with HCl (hydrochloric acid).

    By the conventional standard separation method, the extracted compounds must be neutralized with an acid such as HCl (hydrochloric acid). As humic acid does not dissolve in acids, humic acid precipitates. Consequently, water-soluble humic acid cannot be made by the conventional standard separation method.
